Enkhuizen – Terschelling

Finally – after 15 months of renovations, we are sailing again! Our first trip is taking us to an old time favourite: the island of Terschelling. We leave from Enkhuizen on the 28th of December, where our friend Feitze and his colleague put the finishing touches to Lucipara² by adding new covers for the sails and a completely new tent to cover the cockpit. The tent can stay on while we sail, which keeps us dry and warm(er) in winter – perfect for our trip up North. In summer the tent turns into a bimini to provide shade (you can tell we are preparing for warm destinations rather than the average Dutch summer). After a beautiful day of sailing – everything worked perfectly – our destination for the night is Harlingen. It’s very cosy in our new cabin, especially with the wood stove burning for the first time, to Ivar’s big delight. It was the first item he purchased when we started the final and biggest stage of the boat renovations in September 2013. The next day we reach Terschelling. The light of the Brandaris is guiding us to the harbour and also our friends Saskia and Rob, who arrived on one of the boats of the Zeezeilers van Marken.

We spend a wonderful week on the island, celebrating New Year’s with Saskia and Rob and Margreet, our first guest to sleep on the boat. Fireworks in the harbour, walks over the island and drinks and dinners at De Walvis.

We postponed the return trip by a day, as the winds are too strong to allow a safe passage over the Waddenzee to Harlingen. This means we have to sail in two days back to Amsterdam. The next day the wind is still strong, but doable for Lucipara. A smaller boat has to return to the safety of the harbour, but we manage to steer Lucipara out onto the Wad. It’s a good test for the engine. The sails are raised and we sail again, despite the harsh circumstances. We leave Harlingen on our port side and sail all the way to Enkhuizen, where we once again spend a night in the Compagnieshaven. The last day of our trip is a treat. The IJsselmeer is calm, the wind is perfect and the sun is shining! Winter sailing at its best.

Lucipara² (or 2.0) passed the test and we are two happy campers, eh, sailors!
